Out of Place 2016—2020

Out of Place contains 32 photographs that explore the impact of political context on the perception of place.
The photographs were made while running... with a camera. Running requires physical effort and environmental awareness, leading to less mediation when photographing. The photographs in this series are the result of this very direct approach to image making.
Common Ground 2015—2017

Common Ground is a collaboration between photographer A.J. Pretorius and writer Simon Guy.
The book raises and explores the tensions, contradictions and questions that result from different claims to shared physical and social space. Interleaving photographs and text, it was designed to avoid fixed meanings and to encourage reflection and dialogue.

Unhome 2012—2015

Unhome is a photographic study of immigration and belonging. In it, photographer A.J. Pretorius captures the state of suspension between the familiar and foreign that characterises relocation. As an immigrant himself, the photographer challenges more common non-émigré depictions of immigration.
