Johannes Pretorius is a South African photographer based in Northern England. His work is experiential, takes a personal perspective, and draws on the traditions of documentary and fine art photography.
A key topic of interest is the relationship between people and place, and the different meanings that places can assume. He is fascinated by the idea that a sense of psychological ‘homelessness’ permeates much of present-day behaviour and experience.
Johannes is a self-taught photographer, but his analytical and curiosity-driven approach is informed by a background in scientific research. He studied computer science, information science, and mathematics. His work has been funded by Arts Council England.
