Biography
Johannes Pretorius is a photographer based in Northern England. His key topics are people's relationships to others, to place, and to the social context in which they live and work. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Photographic Society, Open Eye Gallery, FORMAT photography festival, and Abbot Hall gallery. He has received support from Arts Council England, the Gaia Foundation, Lakeland Arts, and Signal Film and Media.
Statement
I am curious about circumstances and stories, and what they reveal about social and cultural conditions. Influenced by the documentary photography tradition, I make observational photographs informed by research. My current work explores the tension between economic viability and environmental sustainability in contexts such as agriculture and industry. My aim is to foreground the balancing act between material and environmental prosperity as an urgent, shared challenge.
